DESIGN SOLUTION FOR EXTERIOR SUBWAY

We started development activities for the Minsk Subway in 2018 by proposing concept drafts of train exterior. By that time preliminary arrangement was already available. This was somewhat adjusted throughout the project which called for considerable changes of already-approved solutions. As an example, front body of head cars was changed several times. This had a serious impact on the graphic design of the front.

The objectives to the development of the new color and graphical design solution for the third line of Minsk Subway were: creating a distinctive memorable image, maintaining the association with Minsk and Minsk Subway, underpinning the high engineering standards of the new cars, attention to passenger safety and functional aspects of operation.

The coat of arms of Minsk is located at the cabin side. Despite the important role the coat of arms played in the selection of color and graphic solution, it was intentionally made less dynamic. The classic pattern involving a white strip along the side was intended to create an association with subway trains operating at the first and the second lines. The broad diagonal band in the front and back visually divides the passenger section and the cab, and imparts dynamism and expression to the composition.

The red vertical bands at the front body carry both warning and aesthetic functions. The lower part of the front body bears the distinctive arrow-like style element of the Statler brand.

A soft association with the coat of arms of Minsk, the evident visual connection with the Minsk Subway's First and Second Lines, the traditional color pattern and the visually dynamic and expressive deign.
This was our view of the new subway car. The decision to adopt the color and graphic solution it was made during a general meeting.
